Fudge on watching television
I haven't quite been fond of watching television for a couple of years now. However, in this time of doldrums, I randomly turn that poison box on to find some quality shows. I did find one. Nope, not during
prime time TV as they call it, I found The Oprah Winfrey Show, in the late morning when practically everyone would be at work, school or still in dreamland.
The charm of Oprah can't possibly be articulated in words. It's just an indescribable charisma. At the golden age of 50 (at the time of this episode. Now she's 52), I do believe her life experience and her relationship with God does play a major role in nurturing this ineffable trait. As we mature, I believe we either become more Christ-like or more evil, or even worse, sneakily evil or unscrupulous.
In the episode broadcast today, she entertained a number of personal questions from the audience. In response to a young lady saying that she respects Oprah and wants to become just like her, Oprah said that she should be herself, and that Oprah can only be a beacon, because she believes that God has a dream for everyone, and we should live that dream! How true, and I enjoyed the wit and humour in which she carried the message across.
Not surprisingly, that young lady was filled with gratitude and declared that she will name her daughter Oprah. Interestingly, Oprah revealed the origin of her name! In the bible:
Ruth 1:3-5 (New International Version)
Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named
Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.
Notice a difference? Oprah Winfrey and Orpah, the Moabite. Interestingly, her name was insisted by her aunt, who misspelled Orpah.
I guess there are some good shows worth watching, especially Oprah. To me, it's mostly about life, about people who fought adversities and triumphed over hardships. It's also entertainment, humour and wit. Most importantly, I am really impressed by her advice to the young lady. To me, it means:
you may want to be someone else, but God has a specific dream for you - will you live that dream?Jeremiah 29:11-12
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you."
1 Corinthians 11:1
"Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."Bible references have been taken from bibleGateway.com
